Lincoln has been here all week – can you tell?
We had a grand time doing the usual things. Reading and writing, playing cards and puzzling, eating and talking, and ALL the laughter.
He’s 12 you know, and I can’t help wondering. How many more times will he spontaneously hug me when I walk in? How much longer will he choose to spend his time with us old folk? (He recently said that we are really “spry” for our age.) Will he keep asking for pepperoni flatbread pizza every time he’s here? When will he stop cooperating with my cooperative writing exercises?
Of course I would like to hope never, but I do want him to be a happy healthy adult someday too so I suppose it can’t be helped, the growing up thing. Instead, I treasure every sleepover and every hug, and keep pizza in my freezer!
Just for fun, here’s one of our recent 5 minute writes.
SNAKES … interesting or creepy?
I say:
CREEPY! All the slimy slithering. All the poisonous bites! They give me the shivers. I think I know why though. When I was a kid my mom was deathly afraid of all snakes. If she saw one, she would scream at the top of her lungs until the neighbor came over and CHOPPED ITS HEAD OFF! Also if she was mowing and saw a snake? Forget the nice neat mowing lines in the lawn. No, she ran that snake down with the mower, which of course destroyed it. I can’t even count how many times she did that! So I’m pretty sure I “caught” her fear of snakes.
One time when I was pretty young I remember walking into our furnace room and there were a bunch of little snakes crawling up into the room out of the drain. I literally almost died.
Finally, my friend Cindy has this huge horrible yellow snake living in a cage in her house – except somehow it keeps escaping. Obviously I can never stay there again.
Lincoln says:
Snakes are very interesting.Snakes are the only boned animal with that movement type. Ancient humans literally grew extra snake detecting neurons in their brains. They can unhinge their jaws and swallow a whole chicken! Snakes are at the meso predator stage, meaning they are only hunted by apex predators, similar to sharks. Snakes have been around since the beginning of animal creation. Many people are ophidiophobic, or severely scared of snakes.

When I was young (Think 6 or 7) my older brother was hunting adders. He killed them and then put them in alcohol in his bedroom. After awhile he had about 20 glas jars with these venemous creatures.on display. That’s my first encounter with snakes. Anyway, a fun read and thank the professor for his stirring insights.
